TIP #1 - YOU CAN'T GET BLOOD FROM A STONE (OR WORK FROM A TIRED ARTIST).Take your time and work steadily, step by step. Don't kill yourself. If you start struggling and things just aren't working, put your tools down and take a break. This may be difficult if you have customers waiting. Explain that you don't want your exhaustion to affect the quality of the jewelry you're selling. Chances are that your customers will appreciate your candor, offer their sympathy and understanding, and wait a little while until you're ready to go again. Making $100 a day at a show is one thing but making enough name pendants to make $1000 a day is exhausting!
TIP #2 - DON'T GET MAD, GET BETTER Sometimes, despite your best efforts, when you have completed a piece of jewelry, you'll find that the finished result is not exactly the way you wanted it, and you are a little disappointed. Don?t be surprised, and don't let it throw you. It happens to everyone in the beginning, in the middle, and even late in a successful career. One of the most common problems is that the names will be bigger than normal. Don't throw up your hands in despair and give up. Accept the imperfection and move on. Make a commitment to try a little harder next time, and work to avoid the mistakes you made in this piece. Words of wisdom: Keep going to keep growing. Acceptance is part of the growth process. Maybe you can reward yourself with a fancy Swanstrom round nose pliers or a Lindstrom round nose pliers, they'rethe best for round name writing.
TIP #3 - YOU'LL ONLY "SHINE" AS MUCH AS YOUR JEWELRY DOES The whole idea of gold name jewelry is to get something that sparkles. (You don't see a lot of lead name-jewelry out there, do you?) I have had jewelry returned to me more than once for one tiny speck of dirt that I failed to get off and my customer rejected the jewelry thinking it was a defect in the gold. Polishing is a part of the name-jewelry process that only a few people enjoy, but your job as a name jewelry designer is not complete until the piece you created is cleaned and polished. No matter if you use soap and water, a simple polishing cloth, or a fancy ionic cleaner, do the best job you can to clean and polish your wire name jewelry.
TIP #4 - MUSIC TO BEND WIRE NAMES BY. Music has been soothing, comforting, and motivating people for ages. Why not let music soothe your savage customer and stimulate your creativity. Music preferences are highly personal, so pick out something that you love to listen to, whether it's a Beethoven sonata, a Broadway show, or a heavy metal band. The right music can relax you and improve the quality of your work. But remember keep your customer in mind or actually the entire group of cusotmers. Heavy metal might be your favorite but is it your customers favorite and you want to calm them not excite them. So use the music that calms. Unlike music to bend by, music to shop by is intended to create an "ambient" experience for your customers. The right music can lure customers, and make them want to stick around, and watch you work. If it's appropriate, consider bringing a small tape player or CD to your sales site. When it comes to popular music, golden oldies are a hit with a lot of people. Some wire-benders like to play "new age" tapes; soothing and less distracting; their sounds are helpful for establishing a peaceful and welcoming creative "oasis" at a busy mall or craft show.
